Summary

The story “Clever Fox” is about a lion king and his cunning fox minister. When the lion falls sick and cannot hunt, he asks the fox to find him an animal for food. The clever fox devises a plan to trick a foolish donkey by telling him that the lion wants to make him his secretary. The pleased donkey accompanies the fox to the lion’s den, where the lion springs on him and kills him. Before the lion returns from drinking water, the hungry fox quickly eats the donkey’s brain. When the lion questions the missing brain, the fox wittily replies that if the donkey had any brains, he wouldn’t have come to the lion’s den in the first place, implying that donkeys are brainless.
