Wit And Humour, My English Reader, Class IV, Section- D

Section – D

D.1. Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck are both Disney characters. Do you know of some other cartoon characters? Discuss in pairs, your favourite Disney character and why you like it.

Student A:
Yes, I know many cartoon characters! Apart from Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, there are Goofy, Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Simba from The Lion King, Elsa from Frozen, and Moana.

Student B:
My favourite Disney character is Simba from The Lion King. I like him because he is brave and learns to take responsibility. His story teaches us about courage and leadership.

Student A:
That’s a great choice! My favourite is Elsa from Frozen. I like her because she is strong, independent, and cares deeply for her sister. Her powers are also really cool!

Student B:
Yes! Let It Go is such a good song. Disney characters always have something to teach us.

D.2. Observe carefully the Park Guide to Disney Land, Paris. Study “The Fantasy Land’ in the map carefully and read descriptions about its different parts.

(i) How many parts is the Fantasy land divided into?

The Fantasy Land is not explicitly divided into numbered or named “parts” in the description, but rather lists 13 distinct attractions or areas within it (C1 to C13).

(ii) What all can one see in the Fantasy Land during visit to the park?

During a visit to Fantasy Land, one can see:

  • Sleeping Beauty’s Castle
  • A Theatre for shows based on Disney characters (Winnie the Pooh, Friends too)
  • A Puppet Show (Pinocchio)
  • Various rides, including King Arthur, Peter Pan’s Flight, Jumbo the Flying Elephant, Mad Hatter’s Tea Cups, Dumbo’s merry train.
  • The “It’s a small world” musical programme.
  • A peaceful cruise through miniature scenes from fairy tales.
  • Alice’s maze.
  • A Fantasy Festival Stage.
  • The Disney Railroad Fantasy Land Station.
  • Gardens, paths, and various themed buildings.

(iii) The park consists of entertainment programmes, shows and rides. Which part of the Fantasy Land attracts you the most and why?

(This is a subjective question, so I’ll provide an example answer. You can replace this with your own preference.)

The part of Fantasy Land that attracts me the most is C1: Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. It’s the iconic centrepiece of Disneyland and promises to show old-style tapestries and stained glass, relating the story of Sleeping Beauty. I find castles enchanting, and the idea of seeing classic fairy tale elements come to life in such a grand structure is incredibly appealing. It evokes a sense of wonder and magic that perfectly embodies the “fantasy” theme.

(iv) Name the rides, which are not recommended for children under one year.

The rides not recommended for children under one year are:

  • C9: A charming trip on board Dumbo’s merry train
  • C6: Jumbo the Flying Elephant

(v) Pick out five famous fiction characters that you happen to meet.

Based on the descriptions, five famous fiction characters one might “meet” (or whose themes/stories are represented) are:

  1. Sleeping Beauty (from Sleeping Beauty’s Castle – C1)
  2. Winnie the Pooh (from C2 Theatre)
  3. Friends too (from C2 Theatre – implies characters like Tigger, Piglet etc. from the Winnie the Pooh universe)
  4. Pinocchio (from C3 Puppet Show)
  5. Peter Pan (from C5 Peter Pan’s Flight)
  6. Dumbo (from C9/C6 Dumbo’s merry train / Jumbo the Flying Elephant)
  7. Mad Hatter (from C7 Mad Hatter’s Tea Cups)
  8. Alice (from C11 Alice’s maze)
  9. Queen of Hearts (from C11 Alice’s maze)
