Worksheet I

In A.2 ‘Monday Morning Blues’ (Unit-Growing Up) of My English Reader, you have read about Tom Sawyer. He always keeps on making excuses so that he does not have to go to school. The day his tooth was taken out, he sat down at night to write his diary.

5 September, 20___

Monday

I do not want to go to school tomorrow. Since Aunt Polly has taken out my tooth today, I think I can use the excuse that I have a terrible pain in my jaw. She might believe me and may also allow me to take leave. I could also tell her my gums are swollen and that they’re paining a lot. I think this plan will definitely work.

Because Tom was very tired, he slept, leaving his diary page open. When Aunt Polly came in the morning to wake him up, she looked at the diary page. She read it and decided to write a note of advice to Tom in his diary. Help her complete the note by filling in the blanks. Use the Aid Box given on the next page. You may use some words more than once.

Aid Box – will, may, might, could, can, must, would, should

Dear Tom

I’ve just read what you have written. You can take rest today but you must have told me the truth. You could have come up to me and asked me. I may have said ‘yes’. But I believe that you never stop making excuses. You should try and mend your ways, then only you will be able to win the love and respect of others.

Polly

Note: Modals like “can,” “must,” “could,” “may,” “should,” and “will” are used to express permission, obligation, possibility, and future outcomes, aligning with Aunt Polly’s advice.
