Worksheet I

  1. Read the following:

Column A (not sentences): I an umbrella, many have I books, ice-cream he

Column B (sentences): I bought an umbrella, I have many books, He likes ice-cream

The groups of words in Column A do not make any sense. But the groups of words in Column B make complete sense. The groups of words in Column B are Sentences.

Remember: A sentence makes complete sense, begins with a capital letter, and ends with a full stop (.) or question mark (?).

  1. Read the following and put a tick () against the correct sentences. Put a cross (x) against the groups of words that do not make sense (and, therefore, are not sentences).

Worksheet II

  1. Read the following sentences.

I am Mohit. I am ten years old. I study in DAV Public School. I like playing video games, studying on the computer and reading detective stories.

All the above sentences tell us something about Mohit-his age, his school and his hobbies. These sentences are Telling sentences or Statements.

Remember: A telling sentence or statement tells us something.

 

  1. Read the passage A.1 ‘Man Learns to Fly’ (Unit-Adventure) of My English Reader and identify, and write ten ‘Telling sentences’..
    a. In olden times, it was the heartiest desire of many people to fly.
  2. They looked at the birds and kites staying up in the air and wondered why they could not do so.
  3. They were determined to fly like them.
  4. At first, they attached wings to their bodies and jumped off high mountains.
  5. They believed that the wings would help them to fly.
  6. But these experiments proved to be very dangerous.
  7. Many people died and many were seriously injured.
  8. However, people were not discouraged by these failures.
  9. In 1783, two brothers, Jacques and Joseph Montgolfier, made a balloon.
  10. The balloon travelled through the air for a short time and gently came down.
  11. Put the words in the brackets at their proper places to form correct statements. One example is done for you.
    (b) Both wanted to eat the dead animal.
    (c) A fox was watching their fight.
    (d) He quietly ate the deer and went away.
    (e) When the lion and the bear got tired, they decided to share the prey.
    (f) But they were surprised to see that their meal had already vanished.
  12. Rearrange the following words to make proper statements. One example is given for you.

where, how, etc. For examples,

(It is in my bag.)

Why have you not completed your homework?

(I was absent yesterday.)

When was Mahatma Gandhi born?

(He was born on 2nd October 1869)

Where was he born?

(He was born at Gujrat)

All the above sentences are Command sentences. Command sentences either order somebody, advice somebody or request somebody. These sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop.

Remember: Command sentences give orders, advice, or requests and end with a full stop.

  1. Rewrite the following story using capital letters, full stops or questions marks wherever necessary..
    A hawk was trying to catch a pigeon. Just then, a noble man captured the hawk. The helpless hawk pleaded to be set free.
    “Why should I set you free?” said the noble man.
    “I have never harmed you. Why, then, do you want to harm me?” To this, the noble man replied, “Has this pigeon ever harmed you in any way?” The hawk realised its mistake and apologised to the pigeon and the noble man.
