C.1. – SUMMARY In English: The Vendor Of Sweets

“The Vendor of Sweets” is a touching story about Munisamy, a sweet vendor who sells sweets outside a school. He works hard all day and does not allow his two-year-old son to eat the sweets, believing they are only for selling. One day, when his son eats a sweet from the tray, Munisamy slaps him and rushes out, fearing bad luck for the business. Later, he trips and drops all the sweets in a gutter. Realizing his mistake and cruelty, he returns home regretful, sees his son’s tear-stained face, and promises never to hurt him again. He finally gives him sweets with love and affection, realizing that his child is more precious than profit.

Brief Summary Paragraph:

Munisamy was a hard-working sweet vendor who sold sweets mainly to school children. Although his business was thriving, he never allowed his own two-year-old child to touch the sweets. On the school’s reopening day, as he prepared to go out, he saw his child pick up a sweet. In anger, he slapped the child and stormed out. On the way, he tripped and his sweets fell into a gutter. This made him realize he was being punished for his cruelty. Filled with guilt, he returned home, promised never to harm his child again, and gave him sweets with love.

C.5. HOTS

Do you think Munisamy would have realised his mistake if his tray of sweets had not fallen into the gutter accidentally?

Answer:
Maybe not. Munisamy was blinded by his greed and superstition. The loss of his sweets shocked him into realizing that his child, whom he had hurt, was more precious than profit. The accident acted as a wake-up call. Without that loss, he might not have felt the guilt or understood the true value of love and compassion.

C.6. Life Skills

Munisamy’s son picked a sweet from his tray which infuriated Munisamy. He considered it an ‘ill-omen’.  Superstitions often put us in trouble. Imagine you have a friend who is superstitious like Munisamy. He/She stops if a black cat crosses his/her path or does not go out if someone sneezes when he/she is about to step outside. How will you explain to him/her to shun superstitions and have a rational approach towards life?

Answer:
I would gently explain to my friend that superstitions have no scientific basis and often lead to unnecessary fear or wrong decisions. I would share examples like Munisamy, who thought a child touching sweets was bad luck, but it was actually his anger that brought misfortune. I’d encourage my friend to think logically and rely on facts, not blind beliefs. We should trust our actions and not superstitions for success.
