- 1. ‘Time and tide wait for no one.’— We all know this very well but still most of us keep on postponing our work. Select 8-10 students in the class and conduct the following survey.
- Total no. of students in your class. – 37
- No. of students who regularly do their work on time. – 11
- No. of students who always keep their work pending. – 19
- No. of students who occasionally do their work on time. – 07
Discuss the result of the survey in the class. Also discuss the various reasons that children give for doing or not doing their work on time.
B.3. Complete the central idea of the poem by filling in only one word:
The poet agrees that one faces a lot of trouble and worries in life. There also are burdens which bend people double with their weight but in spite of all this one must keep on working and towards one’s goal.
He further says that everyone likes to remain idle and wait for the favourable fortune if need be.
The poet adds that no one will ever win, there is hardly anyone who can fail but one must always be ready to fight if he tries hard and also by just sitting and waiting for good luck to come. One can only carve a path of success if one is up and doing hard.
B.4. Match the phrases given in Column A with their meanings in Column B:
Column A | Column B |
(i) heaps of cares | (e) lots of worries |
(ii) keep pursuing | (c) to keep doing |
(iii) see it through | (d) not to give up a task until finished |
(iv) like to idle | (a) to love to be carefree and happy |
(v) hewing | (b) carving out, making |
(vi) your sitting, sighing | (f) only talking and blaming |
B.5. Life Skills: Quote any two/three lines from the poem that inspire you the most. Explain in what way do these lines inspire you.
Lines that inspire me the most:
“Few ever fail by trying, Few ever win who wait.”
“Either be up and doing, Or soon you’ll be down and done.”
Explanation:
These lines inspire me because they remind me that success comes only through effort and action. Waiting without trying will never help achieve goals. Being active and determined is the way to overcome challenges.

Dear Surbhi,
I am really sorry to hear about your difficult situation at home. I understand how hard it must be for you to prepare for your tests with so much on your mind. But don’t lose hope. Stay calm and try to manage things step by step.
Maybe you can talk to your family about admitting your mother to a hospital where she can get better care and treatment. Also, you could arrange for some extra help at home, like a domestic helper, so that you get more time to study.
Try making a daily schedule to manage your study and household responsibilities efficiently. Encourage other family members to help and share the work. Don’t hesitate to drop any unnecessary chores from your routine.
Remember, taking care of yourself is important too. Keep your spirits high and keep trying your best.
You can do it!
Your friend,
Pooja
